HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 296
Commending Robert Kenneth "Bob" Krick.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 1, 2002

WHEREAS, following 30 years of meritorious service as chief historian at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Robert Kenneth "Bob" Krick retired from the National Park Service in January 2002; and

WHEREAS, a native of California, Bob Krick earned his bachelor's degree from Pacific Union College and his master's degree from San Jose State University; and

WHEREAS, before arriving in Fredericksburg in 1972, Bob Krick served as historian at Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Maryland, and Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, a cofounder of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites, Bob Krick was a leader throughout his career in the campaign to save Civil War battlefields; and

WHEREAS, when Bob Krick arrived in Fredericksburg, total acreage for Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park was under 3,000; when he retired, the total acreage exceeded 8,000; and

WHEREAS, Bob Krick's passion, persistence, and unquestioned Civil War expertise helped him win many battles to preserve vital Civil War sites throughout the area and earned him the admiration of historians and senior members of Congress; and

WHEREAS, a prolific author, Bob Krick is the author of 12 books on the Civil War, including the 1990 book, Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain, which earned him the Douglas Southall Freeman Award and the Richard Barksdale Harwell Award; and

WHEREAS, Bob Krick's retirement will not mark the end of his preservation efforts, as he has joined the Richmond Battlefields Association and embarked on a campaign to acquire threatened battlefields around the former Confederate capital; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Robert Kenneth “Bob” Krick on the completion of a stellar career of service to the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and the National Park Service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert Kenneth Krick as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his many contributions to the preservation of the Commonwealth's battlefield heritage.
