Winner of the 1992 Harry S. Truman Award for achievement in Civil War scholarship.


Winner of the 1992 Preservation Award for Written History of the Spotsylvania Preservation Association.
Winner of the 1996 W. W. Hassler Award from the Civil War Education Association.

Fellow, Company of Military Historians, by election (1975).
